The T-44 was designed as a successor to the T-34 tank series. Development began in 1943 and production started in 1945. Fewer than 2000 vehicles were produced. The T-44/85 carries the same gun as the T34/85 but with a bigger turret derived from the T34/85 turret. Although not widely deployed, the development of the T-44 contributed to the development of its successor T-54, which was one of the most produced tank in history.
