"Ostwind" - (East Wind) was developed as a successor to the "Wirbelwind" in an attempt to provide increased firepower against aircraft attacks for armour columns. A rapid firing 3.7cm Flak 43 was mounted in an open topped six sided turret nicked name "Keksdose" (Cookie Tin). The open topped design was adopted because of the heavy smoke generated by the gun during firing. The vehicle used the chassis of the "Work Horse" of the Wehrmacht, the Panzer IV. Because of the delay in production caused by Allies bombing facilities, only about 40+ vehicles were built.
