This tank was a member of "Hobart's Funnies" which took part in the Normandy landing in 1944. The Bobbin was based on the Churchill AVRE with a attachment to hold a roll of canvas, usually interleaved with metal piping for strength and ease of rolling flat.
The Bobbin was developed following the lesson learnt form the failed landing attempt at Dieppe where tanks were bogged down by the soft sandy beach. By rolling down the canvas carpet in front of the tank, the weight of the tank was distributed over the carpet surface to facilitate maneuvering over soft sandy beaches.
